Tachibana Hokushi (1665-1718)

A selection of haiku

yakeni keri
saredomo hana wa
chiri sumashi

My house burned down
But anyway, it was after
The flower petals had already fallen.

ashes my burnt hut
but wonderful the cherry
blooming on my hill

-

For that brief moment
when the fire-fly went out... O
the lonely darkness

-

Experimenting
I hung the moon on various
branches of the Pine

-

kaite mitari
keshitari hate wa
keshi no hana

I write, I look, I erase
and in the end
a poppy of erasure

-

karakasa no
ikutsu sugiyuku
yuki no kure

’twas a snowy evening
how many umbrellas went by?

-

botan chitte
kokoro mo okazu
wakare keri

The peony flowers
having fallen
we part without regrets
